Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Hadley Chimney San Antonio stocks and installs Olympia Chimney-compatible chimney caps, with most installations running between $285 and $520 in the San Antonio market depending on flue size, roof height, and whether you need a standard replacement or a custom-fit cap. We’re an independent service provider, not an Olympia Chimney affiliate, which means we can match your existing setup without pushing one brand over another. Most San Antonio homeowners discover their cap has failed after spotting rust streaks on the chimney exterior, noticing water staining near the fireplace, or hearing birds and rodents inside the flue.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney builds caps that fit their proprietary stainless steel chimney systems, most commonly the Olympia line found in newer San Antonio construction and mid-2000s remodels. The cap sits on top of the chimney chase and locks or screws onto the flue pipe termination, so the critical measurements are flue inner diameter, outer diameter, and whether you have a slip-in or bolt-on termination. Before we order or pull a cap off the truck, we match it to the chimney ID plate (usually located inside the firebox or on the chase exterior), and we confirm the flue measurement with a tape measure on the roof, not just from the ground. When an Olympia OEM cap isn’t available or is backordered, we’ll recommend quality aftermarket equivalents that meet the same stainless specs, because in our experience the difference between a good cap and a bad one is the alloy grade (look for 304 stainless minimum in Texas humidity).

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the fireplace. This usually means the cap’s rain diverter or the flue seal has worn out, letting water run down the flue instead of shedding off the cap. We see this a lot in San Antonio after heavy spring downpours.
- Rust streaks or orange staining on the chimney chase or cap itself. A cap that’s rusting is a lower-grade stainless than the job needs, and it’s actively shedding metal flakes onto your roof and into the flue. Texas humidity accelerates this, especially on the south-facing side.
- Animal noise, nesting debris, or droppings in the firebox. A cap with no screen or a torn screen is an open door for squirrels, birds, and raccoons in San Antonio neighborhoods with mature trees (Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Olmos Park).
- Debris, leaves, or twigs inside the flue during inspections. If the cap’s mesh is damaged or missing, whatever’s blowing around your roof ends up in the flue, which becomes a fire hazard when mixed with creosote (the flammable tar buildup inside chimneys that we remove on every sweep).
- The cap is visibly loose, tilted, or you can see daylight around the base. Wind, UV exposure, and thermal expansion/contraction from hot San Antonio summers work caps loose over time. If it moves when the wind blows, it’s pulling the flue seal with it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A standard Olympia Chimney-compatible cap replacement in San Antonio typically falls between $285 and $520 installed. That price includes the cap itself (typically $115 to $310 depending on size and material), the on-roof labor, removal of the old cap, sealant, fastener replacement, and a photo report showing both the old cap and the new one in place. If your chimney requires a custom cap for an unusual flue size or a multi-flue setup, the price pushes toward the upper end because the cap has to be fabricated to spec. Every cap we install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap fails or the installation doesn’t hold within a year, we make it right at no charge. That’s a written guarantee, not a handshake.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for rust streaks, use a camera to photograph the cap and mesh, and listen for animal sounds. If you already have roof access and are comfortable up there, you can also measure the flue outer diameter and check whether the cap is bolted or slip-fit. What we wouldn’t do is attempt the actual removal and replacement yourself. Chimney caps sit on a roof, which means you’re working at height, and the cap itself is often seized to the flue from years of thermal cycling and rust. One slip on a wet San Antonio roof or one stripped anchor bolt can turn a $285 cap swap into an emergency room visit or a damaged chimney. We carry the right pullers, stainless fasteners, and high-temp sealant on the truck, and we’ll show you photos of the old cap off and the new cap on before we leave the property. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll walk you through what to check while we schedule a live tracking window.
FAQs
A quality 304 stainless cap can last 12 to 20 years in San Antonio, but cheaper 409 or unknown-grade stainless caps often fail in 6 to 10 years because the humidity and UV exposure here punish thin material. The first thing to go is usually the mesh screen, followed by the fasteners and the rain diverter. Call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your cap has life left or is ready for replacement.
Sometimes, but not often. If the cap body is solid stainless and only the mesh screen or a couple of fasteners are damaged, we can often make a clean repair on-site. If the cap is rusting through, cracked, or warped, any repair is a temporary patch, and San Antonio’s rain will find the weak spot within a year or two. We’ll show you photos of exactly what we see and let you make the call.
Most single-flue Olympia Chimney cap installations take between 45 and 90 minutes on-site, from ladder setup to photo report. Multi-flue or custom cap jobs can run a couple of hours. We’ll give you a written price before we start, and you’ll get before-and-after photos with a digital invoice you can pay from your phone.
We keep common 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch stainless caps on the truck, along with a range of multi-flue sizes and screen replacements. If your cap needs a specific Olympia OEM match we don’t have on board, we’ll order it and schedule a follow-up install with a firm price and a tracked arrival window. Give us a call at (254) 276-4116 and we’ll check local availability while you’re on the phone.
