Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Gelco chimney cap that’s rusted through, missing its lid, or letting rain pour straight down your flue, we can install a Gelco-compatible replacement in San Antonio, typically for $285 to $520 installed, depending on your flue size and roof pitch. Most Gelco cap replacements we do are completed in a single visit, since our trucks stock the common Gelco multi-flue and single-flue cap sizes. What usually brings owners to this page: they spotted rust streaks on the chimney crown, heard water dripping into the firebox during a storm, or a home inspector flagged the cap during a pre-listing inspection.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco chimney caps come in two main families that cover the vast majority of San Antonio homes. The Gelco single-flue cap fits one clay tile or round metal liner, usually 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″ square or 6″ to 8″ round. The Gelco multi-flue cap covers multiple flues on a shared chimney crown, and this is where we see most ordering mistakes. The multi-flue cap legs need to sit on a flat crown with enough clearance between the flue tops and the cap’s mesh screen, typically 5″ of vertical rise. San Antonio homes built in the 1960s through 1980s, especially around Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Castle Hills, often have crowns that were poured unevenly, which means a stock Gelco multi-flue leg kit won’t sit level without shimming or a crown repair first. The other compatibility gotcha: Gelco caps are sized by the outside dimension of your flue tile, not the inside opening. Measure the tile’s outer edge to outer edge, or let us do it from the roof so you don’t guess wrong and end up with a cap that sits cockeyed or won’t clamp down. For OEM versus aftermarket, Gelco’s stainless steel and copper caps are our default recommendation. Some aftermarket galvanized caps cost less upfront, but in San Antonio’s heat and summer storm cycles, galvanized mesh starts blooming rust in three to five years. Gelco’s stainless holds up far longer, and when we install, we photograph the cap and the crown so you can see exactly what got mounted.
We’re an independent chimney service company in San Antonio. We install Gelco caps and stock their common replacement parts, but we’re not affiliated with Gelco as a manufacturer or authorized dealer.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney crown or brick face. This usually means the cap’s mesh or base is galvanized steel breaking down. In San Antonio, the combination of high humidity, hard rain, and extreme sun cycles accelerates rust faster than drier climates. The streaks are cosmetic at first, but the underlying metal is thinning where you can’t see it.
- Water in the firebox after a heavy rain. A failed Gelco cap lid, or a cap that shifted and left a gap over one flue, lets water run straight down the liner. You’ll typically notice a damp smell or see water stains on the firebox floor. This is also how you get cracked firebrick in a freeze spell.
- Birds, squirrels, or bees getting inside. Once the mesh side panels tear away or the cap lifts, animals move in fast. We’ve pulled nests out of flues more times than we can count, and a blocked flue with nesting material is a carbon monoxide risk, not a nuisance.
- Cap rattling or visibly tilted after a wind storm. The clamp bolts or leg brackets can work loose over time. A tilted cap channels water against the flue tile instead of past it. San Antonio gets those sudden spring squalls with 40 mph gusts, and that’s usually when a loose cap makes itself known.
- Debris accumulating on the cap’s mesh or inside the flue. A Gelco cap’s mesh is designed to pass air while stopping embers and animals. When the mesh clogs with creosote, twigs, or cottonwood seed fluff, draft drops and smoke starts backing up into the house. A clogged cap mesh is one of the most common causes of a smoky fireplace we see in older San Antonio homes.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco or Gelco-compatible chimney cap replacement in San Antonio typically runs $285 to $520 installed, and here’s what drives the spread. A stock single-flue stainless cap with basic leg clamps lands at the lower end, around $285 to $360. A multi-flue cap, a copper Gelco cap, or a cap that needs custom leg extensions to clear an uneven crown will push toward the $400 to $520 range. Steep roof pitches and two-story chimney access add labor, because we’re setting up ladder stabilizers and safety lines, not free-climbing. Every quote includes the cap itself, mounting hardware, and the labor, in writing, before we touch a tool. If your crown has cracking or spalling from years of water exposure, that’s a separate repair and we’ll show you photos before recommending it. Our work comes with the 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee on every repair, and if the installation fails within that year, we return and fix it free. You can see what you’re paying for, because we send photos of the old cap, the crown, and the new cap mounted, along with a digital invoice you can pay from your phone.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check one thing from the ground: look up at the cap with binoculars or take a photo with your phone zoomed in, and note whether it’s tilted, rusted, or missing panels. But we’d stop you right there on the DIY route. Installing a chimney cap means working at height, often on a roof pitch where one wrong step sends you sliding. You’re carrying a metal cap, a drill, and hardware, all while balancing near an edge. We’ve also seen homeowners crack their chimney crown by over-tightening clamp bolts into old concrete. The crown is the flat concrete slab at the top of the chimney, and once it cracks, water gets behind it and starts one of the most expensive repair chains in the chimney trade. Our techs are background-checked, uniformed, and trained on roof safety, and they arrive in a tracked window, not a four-hour guess. If you’d rather not climb, call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll handle the rooftop part. See the problem, understand the fix, then decide, that’s how it should work.
FAQs
A Gelco stainless steel cap typically lasts 10 to 20 years in San Antonio, while galvanized versions often fail in 5 to 8 years. The biggest wear factors in this climate are the extreme sun, which degrades paint and accelerates galvanic corrosion, and the heavy spring and fall rain cycles that sit water on the cap’s seams. If your cap is galvanized and showing rust, budget for replacement sooner rather than later. Call (254) 276-4116 for a free estimate, and we’ll tell you honestly if you can squeeze more life out of what you have.
It depends on the failure. A bent leg or a loose clamp can usually be repaired in place for under $100, while a rusted-out mesh or a lid that’s separated from the base makes replacement the smarter call. Repairing rusted mesh panel by panel costs more in labor than installing a new cap in most cases. We’ll show you a photo of the damage before you commit to anything, with a written price first.
Most Gelco cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re set up on the roof. The setup, ladder placement, roof safety line, and final photo documentation add another 30 to 45 minutes. You don’t need to be home for the installation, and we’ll send the before-and-after photos and a digital invoice when the job is done.
We stock common Gelco single-flue and multi-flue cap sizes on our trucks in San Antonio. For oddball flue dimensions or copper cap requests with a specific patina, we can source the part, usually within three to five business days. If you’re not sure what size you need, we’ll measure from the roof and match the cap to your flue tile, that’s part of the service. Call (254) 276-4116 to get on the schedule or ask us to bring a specific Gelco model out.
