Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Damper Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Copperfield damper repair in San Antonio typically runs $225 – $485 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the control cable, or the full frame assembly. We stock Copperfield-compatible parts on our trucks, so we can usually handle the repair the same day we come out. Most San Antonio homeowners discover theirs failed the same way: a damper that’s suddenly stuck open in January, letting cold air pour down the chimney while the heating bill climbs.
Before you assume the whole unit is shot, know this: a Copperfield top-sealing damper is actually a system of parts. The plate up top, the steel cable that runs down the flue, the mounting bracket, and the handle assembly at the firebox. Any one of those can fail independently. Figuring out which one did is the difference between a $250 cable swap and a $600 full replacement. That’s exactly what we show you with photos before we quote anything.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes two main damper lines we see across San Antonio chimneys: the original CF-TC series (top-closing, cable-operated) and the newer CF-LC lever-control models. The TC series uses a stainless steel cable that runs from a mounting bracket at the flue top down to a handle or worm-gear control at the firebox. The LC series trades the cable for a rigid lever rod, which is less likely to snap but harder to route through offsets in the flue.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Copperfield cables and mounting brackets are sized to flue inner diameter, not to the brand name on your old damper. We’ve seen San Antonio homes where someone previously installed a 13-inch plate on an 12-inch clay tile flue and called it good. It wasn’t. The plate binds, the cable wears, and you’re back to square one in a year or two. We measure the flue before we order or install anything.
On OEM vs aftermarket: genuine Copperfield parts are well made and what we use when the flue size matches the model exactly. But for older TC-series units where Copperfield has long since discontinued the original bracket, we go with quality aftermarket equivalents that have proven themselves in San Antonio’s freeze-thaw cycles. We’ll tell you which one we’re using and why. You’ll see the old part and the new one side by side in the photos we send.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle turns but nothing happens. The cable has either snapped at the top where it connects to the plate, or the set screw on the handle assembly has stripped. You won’t feel resistance because you’re no longer connected to the damper plate.
- You can hear wind whistling through the firebox on gusty San Antonio afternoons. The damper isn’t sealing. Either the plate is warped from years of heat cycles, or the silicone gasket around the plate rim has hardened and cracked.
- The cable feels gritty or sticks halfway. Creosote and soot are eating at the cable jacket. We see this constantly in San Antonio fireplaces that get used heavily over holiday months, then ignored all summer while humidity sits on the metal.
- You feel cold air rolling out of the firebox even when the handle is in the closed position. The plate isn’t seating flush against the flue tile. Sometimes that’s a hinge problem. Sometimes it’s a damper sized wrong from day one.
- Rust streaks are running down the flue tile near the top. The mounting bracket is failing, or the plate itself is corroding. San Antonio’s occasional freezing rain combined with acidic creosote residue creates exactly the right conditions for that.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A Copperfield damper repair in San Antonio breaks down roughly like this, installed:
- Control cable replacement: $225 – $320. The old cable gets pulled, a new stainless steel one routed, and the handle assembly re-tensioned.
- Damper plate replacement: $280 – $410. This assumes the bracket and cable are still serviceable. We replace the plate and gasket, check the seal, and adjust as needed.
- Full Copperfield-compatible top-seal damper swap: $420 – $685. New plate, cable, bracket, and handle. This is the right call when two or more components have failed, or the flue size never matched the old damper in the first place.
Every price you get from Hadley Chimney San Antonio is a written price before any work starts. Not an estimate, not a range we can expand at the door. The number we quote is the number you pay. That price includes parts, labor, measurement of the flue, and photos of the finished work. And every Copperfield damper repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails in the first year, we come back and make it right for free. That’s a written guarantee, not a verbal one.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
A top-sealing damper doesn’t have the high-tension springs you’d find on a garage door, so it’s not in that danger category. But here’s the honest reality of DIY damper work: you’re either on a sloped roof reaching down a clay tile flue, or you’re in the firebox working upside down with limited angles. Neither is where we’d point a homeowner. We’ve seen too many cracked flue tiles from a dropped cable guide, and too many “new” damper plates that bind because the flue measurement was off by half an inch.
What you can safely check beforehand: note the make and model if there’s a label on the handle assembly, measure the inside of your flue tile if you can reach it comfortably, and take a photo of the control mechanism so we know what we’re dealing with. Then call us. We’ll take it from there. Cory Mitchell and the crew know this exact failure pattern cold, because we’ve replaced enough Copperfield dampers in San Antonio to see every way they fail.
FAQs
A well-installed Copperfield damper typically lasts 8 – 14 years in the San Antonio area, but the cable often goes first, usually around year 6 or 7. The plate and bracket can go much longer if the flue sizing was right from the start and the fireplace isn’t burning wet wood that produces acidic creosote. Call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll take a camera up the flue to see exactly what’s left in yours.
We repair far more Copperfield dampers than we replace. If the cable snapped but the plate still seats well and isn’t corroded, that’s a straightforward cable replacement. Full replacement only makes sense when the plate is warped, the bracket is failing, or the damper was sized wrong to start with. We’ll show you the camera inspection photos before we recommend one path or the other.
Most Copperfield cable and plate replacements take 60 – 90 minutes on site. A full system swap on a difficult offset flue might run up to two hours. You’ll get a live arrival window before we come, and before-and-after photos of the damper in the open and closed position once the work is done.
Yes. We carry Copperfield-compatible cables, plates, brackets, and hardware on our trucks, along with parts for other brands we service like DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco. If we can’t match a specialty size on the first visit, we’ll tell you exactly when the part arrives and what the total will be before you commit to anything.
