Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Copperfield chimney caps throughout San Antonio, with most Copperfield cap installations running between $285 and $540 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. We typically complete the swap same-day once we’re on site, and you’ll get a written price before anyone touches a ladder. Most San Antonio homeowners discover their cap has failed the ugly way: a rusted ring left on the chimney crown after a storm, a cap that’s half-detached and rattling, or water staining on the ceiling near the flue because the cap’s mesh screen rusted through and let rain pour straight down.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes two cap lines we see most often in San Antonio homes: their standard single-flue caps and the multi-flue (or “universal”) models used on larger masonry chimneys. The single-flue units are sized by the outside dimensions of your clay flue tile, typically 8″x8″, 8″x13″, 13″x13″, or 17″x17″ in this market. You can ID yours by looking at the underside of the existing cap: Copperfield stamps the model number and dimensions on the mounting base or the mesh band. If the stamp has rusted away, measure the outside of your flue tile (not the inside opening) and add that to your notes before you call. Copperfield’s OEM caps are solid galvanized steel with a powder-coat finish on their premium lines, and they’re built to handle the specific heat and moisture cycling we get in South Texas. We also work with quality aftermarket equivalents, but our honest take: on Copperfield chimneys, the OEM fitment is usually worth the small premium because the mounting legs and corner brackets are sized exactly for their hood profiles. One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: Copperfield’s stainless models from their “Legacy” series use a different mounting-bracket drilling pattern than the older galvanized units, so if you’re replacing a 15-year-old cap, don’t buy the new bracket set assuming it’ll reuse the old screw holes.
We’re an independent San Antonio chimney service company, not affiliated with Copperfield directly, but we’ve installed enough of their caps over the years to know exactly how they mount and where they fail in this climate.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This usually means the cap’s top hood has rusted through or the mounting seal has degraded, letting rainwater run down the flue and into the masonry. In San Antonio’s humid summers and storm-heavy springs, we see this progression within 3 to 5 years after the cap’s original sealant breaks down.
- Rust streaks running down the chimney crown. A failed cap’s galvanized base plate rusts first, and the rust washes down onto the crown and brick. You’ll see orange-brown trails that don’t clean off, which tells you the cap’s base is actively corroding and the flue opening is no longer properly shielded.
- Loose or rattling cap after windstorms. The mounting legs on Copperfield caps use corner brackets that loosen over time as the masonry expands and contracts. Once the legs wobble, the cap can lift in a strong gust and shift off-center, which is the exact moment water gets a direct path into the flue.
- Birds, squirrels, or wasps inside the flue. The mesh screen around a Copperfield cap rusts out faster than the hood itself, especially near the coast with salt in the air or after repeated storm cycles. Once that screen has holes, animals move in fast, and a squirrel nest in a flue is a house-fire waiting for the first cold snap.
- A visible hole or split in the hood from hail. San Antonio gets its share of severe hailstorms. Copperfield’s galvanized hoods can dent and split under hail larger than golf ball size. If you can see daylight through the cap from the ground, that cap is done and the next rain goes straight down your flue.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Copperfield chimney cap installation in San Antonio generally runs $285 to $540 fully installed for standard single-flue homes. The cap itself accounts for $85 to $190 depending on size and material (galvanized vs stainless), the mounting hardware and sealant run $25 to $60, and labor covers the rest. If your chimney has multiple flues, the cap cost goes up accordingly, usually adding $100 to $180 per additional flue. The big driver of the range is flue size: a 13″x13″ flue cap costs more than an 8″x8″, and stainless-steel models run about 40% more than galvanized. We’ll give you an exact written price before work begins, and every Copperfield cap installation at Hadley Chimney San Antonio carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation fails within a year, we return and fix it at no charge. The cap itself also carries the manufacturer’s own materials warranty, which we’ll register for you.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Chimney work always involves working at height, and a chimney cap installation means standing on or reaching over your roofline while handling metal components and drilling into masonry. We don’t recommend it as a DIY project unless you’re comfortable on a roof with proper fall protection, and honestly, most of the cap failures we repair in San Antonio happened because the original install was done by someone who didn’t properly seal the mounting base. What you can safely do is inspect from the ground with binoculars: look for rust streaks, missing mesh, or a shifted cap. If the cap is loose enough to rattle in the wind, it’s loose enough to create a water path, and that’s work for a pro. Camera documentation is part of how we work: we’ll show you exactly what we remove and what we install. Call us at (254) 276-4116 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before anyone climbs up.
FAQs
In San Antonio’s climate, a Copperfield galvanized cap typically lasts 8 to 12 years, while a stainless model can go 15 to 20 years or more. The big killer is our freeze-thaw cycle combined with high humidity: trapped moisture corrodes the mounting hardware and mesh screen from the inside out. If your cap shows rust streaks or loose mounting legs, it’s near the end regardless of age. Call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll assess what’s left in yours.
Minor mesh tears and small rust spots can sometimes be patched, but we’ll tell you straight: on most San Antonio homes, a cap with visible rust through the base, split mounting brackets, or loose legs is not worth repairing. Patching a rusted cap buys you a season, not a solution. We’ll show you photos of the damage and let you see the problem, understand the fix, then decide.
A standard single-flue Copperfield cap installation takes about 45 minutes to an hour of actual roof time for a technician who knows the chimney. The full visit, including setup, inspection, and the before-and-after photo documentation you get from us, is usually 90 minutes door to door. If we find additional issues while we’re up there, we’ll pause, call you, and show you photos before any extra work is approved.
We stock the most common Copperfield single-flue sizes on our trucks: 8″x8″, 8″x13″, 13″x13″ in both galvanized and stainless. Less common sizes, like 17″x17″ or larger multi-flue units, usually arrive within 2 to 3 business days from our local supplier. We’ll confirm what’s in stock when you call, and we don’t start the job until the right cap is in hand.
Every Copperfield cap install includes The Relay Visibility Guarantee: a live arrival window, before-and-after photos, a written price before work starts, and a digital invoice you can pay from your phone. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed, and calls are answered by a live person 24/7 at (254) 276-4116. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco materials when your chimney needs more than a cap replacement, so you’re not coordinating five companies for one chimney.
