Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If your DuraFlex damper has seized, warped, or stopped sealing, we can repair or replace it, typically for $285 to $540 installed in San Antonio, depending on the damper style and whether the mounting collar needs replacement too. Most DuraFlex damper repairs are done in a single visit. You usually discover the problem the first cold night of fall: the fire won’t draw, smoke rolls back into the living room, or you hear a metallic rattle up top when the wind picks up.
DuraFlex makes two damper families that cross our workbench most often: the cast-aluminum top-sealing dampers that mount at the flue crown, and the stainless throat dampers that sit just above the firebox. Both versions have their own failure patterns here in South Texas. The top-sealing dampers fight direct sun, rain, and the occasional hailstorm, while throat dampers sit in the path of every bit of heat and creosote your fires produce. We carry OEM DuraFlex replacement assemblies and spring/quadrant repair kits on the truck, and when a DuraFlex part is discontinued or backordered, we offer equivalent aftermarket units that match the flue dimensions exactly.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex built its reputation on flexible aluminum liner systems, but their damper line is what most San Antonio homeowners actually interact with day to day. The most common units we service are the DuraFlex top-mount dampers in 6″, 7″, 8″, and 9″ flue sizes, plus the cast-iron throat dampers found in older masonry fireplaces that were retrofitted with DuraFlex liners during a resale inspection. If you don’t know which one you have, look up: a top-mount damper has a spring-loaded cap you can see from the ground, often with a cable running down the flue to a bracket in the firebox. A throat damper is the flat metal plate you push open by hand just above the fire.
The critical compatibility gotcha with DuraFlex dampers is the mounting collar. Top-mount units clamp onto the flue tile or liner with a collar gasketed for a specific outside diameter. A 7″ damper on a 7″ liner sounds obvious, but if your liner is ovalized or has an adapter at the termination, the stock collar won’t seat. We’ve fixed more than a few DIY installs in neighborhoods like Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills where a damper was forced onto a mismatched collar and the first strong wind ripped the springs loose. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: DuraFlex OEM dampers are well built, and if the unit is under ten years old and the failure is just a spring or cable, OEM repair parts are the right call. If the casting itself is cracked or the unit is older than fifteen years, a quality aftermarket replacement with a thicker gauge stainless body often outlasts what DuraFlex originally shipped.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- Smoke spills back into the room when you light a fire. This usually means the damper isn’t opening fully, or the blade is warped and blocking the flue. On a top-mount unit, a kinked or detached cable is the likely culprit.
- A metallic rattle from the chimney when the wind blows. The springs on a top-mount damper hold the cap closed. When one breaks, the cap flaps in the breeze and slams against the flue tile. It sounds like something is loose up there, because something is.
- The damper handle moves but nothing happens. On throat dampers, the cast iron blade can crack at the pivot point, so the handle turns while the blade stays frozen. This is the most common failure we see on 20+ year old fireplaces in the King William area.
- Cold air pours into the house even with the damper “closed.” A worn gasket or a blade that no longer seats flat lets conditioned air escape up the flue constantly. Your AC bill notices even if you don’t.
- You see daylight around the edges of a closed throat damper. Get a flashlight and look up from the firebox. If light gets through, air gets through, and so do the wasps that seem to love San Antonio chimneys.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Antonio, a DuraFlex damper repair or replacement typically runs $285 to $540 installed. At the low end you’re looking at cable, spring, and handle replacement on an existing unit that’s otherwise sound. Mid-range jobs replace the entire top-mount assembly. The higher end covers a full removal of a failed unit, collar replacement, and installation of a new damper with a sturdier spring pack. We don’t charge by the hour; we price the job before we start, and the written quote covers parts, labor, and cleanup.
Every damper repair we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s a written guarantee on every job, not a verbal promise. And because we’re part of the Relay Home Co. family, you get before-and-after photos of your damper, a digital invoice you can pay from your phone, and live arrival tracking on the day of the visit. No four-hour window, no guy whose name you never catch, no price that changes when he’s up on the roof.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely diagnose a damper problem yourself: look for daylight around a closed throat damper, pull the cable if you have a top-mount unit and feel for resistance, and listen for rattling on windy days. That tells you something is wrong. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto your roof and start prying at a failed top-mount damper. The spring pack is under tension, the flue crown is often slick with morning dew or algae, and a fall from a one-story San Antonio roofline is a hospital trip at best. Even on accessible throat dampers, removal usually means cutting out the old unit with an angle grinder in a confined space while debris drops into the firebox.
If you can see the problem but not safely reach it, call us at (254) 276-4116. Cory Mitchell and the crew have been doing this work across San Antonio for years, and the quote is free. See the problem, understand the fix, then decide, that’s how it should work.
FAQs
A properly installed DuraFlex top-mount damper lasts 12 to 18 years in the San Antonio climate, though the cable and springs often need replacement at the 8 to 10 year mark. Throat dampers in heavy-use fireplaces can crack earlier, especially if the fireplace was used with a damaged chimney cap that let rainwater pool on the blade. If your unit is over 15 years old and failing, replacement is usually the smarter spend. Call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll tell you which side of that line your damper is on.
Yes, if the failure is in the spring, cable, or handle quadrant, we can usually repair it in under an hour. If the cast body is cracked, warped, or the blade no longer seats, the unit needs replacement. We’ll show you photos of exactly what we found before recommending either route. Estimates are free.
A cable or spring repair on a top-mount unit usually takes 45 minutes to an hour on site. A full replacement with collar work can take two to three hours, including cleaning the mounting surface and testing the seal. Most jobs are done in one visit, and we’ll tell you the timeframe when you book. Call (254) 276-4116 for a same-week appointment in most San Antonio neighborhoods.
Yes. We keep OEM DuraFlex spring packs, cables, and handle assemblies, plus full replacement dampers in 6″, 7″, 8″, and 9″ flue sizes on the truck. If your unit needs a size we don’t have on board, our San Antonio supplier has most DuraFlex and equivalent aftermarket parts available same day. We’re an independent service provider, not part of DuraFlex corporate, so we stock what actually fits and works, not just what one brand sells. We also work with HeatShield and Gelco products when the damper repair turns out to be part of a larger flue issue. Call (254) 276-4116 and we’ll confirm we have your part before we head out.
